Antonio Gramsci is one of the best known and most studied Italian intellectuals in the world, there are countless essays, conferences and institutes dedicated to him. Born on January 22, 1891 in Ales in Sardinia, Gramsci devoted his entire life to militancy and study, working with political theory, philosophy, history, sociology and linguistics. To get you closer to his very contemporary thinking, I recommend this interview and that incredible testimony of life, dignity and lucidity that are the "Letters from prison", the correspondence sent from the prisons where he lived for 20 years and where he also wrote the Notebooks.
Franco looks very vivacious and intelligent: I’m sure that he already speaks fluently. In what language does he speak? I hope that you will let him speak Sardinian and will not make any trouble for him on that score. It was a mistake, in my opinion, not to allow Edmea to speak freely in Sardinian as a little girl. This harmed her intellectual development and put her imagination in a straitjacket. You mustn’t make this mistake with your children. For one thing Sardinian is not a dialect, but a language in itself, even though it does not have a great literature, and it is a good thing for children to learn several languages, if it is possible. Besides, the Italian that you will teach him will be a poor, mutilated language made up of only the few sentences and words of your conversations with him, purely childish; he will not have any contact with a general environment and will end up learning two jargons and no language: an Italian jargon for official conversation with you and a Sardinian jargon learned piecemeal to speak with the other children and the people he meets in the street or piazza. I beg you, from my heart, not to make this mistake and to allow your children to absorb all the Sardinian spirit they wish and to develop spontaneously in the natural environment in which they were born: this will not be an impediment for their future, just the opposite.
