La Settimana del 29 Gennaio 2021
"O frati," dissi, "che per cento milia
perigli siete giunti a l’occidente,
'O brothers, who amid a hundred thousand
Perils,' I said, 'have come unto the West,
To this so inconsiderable vigilWhich is remaining of your senses still,
Be ye unwilling to deny the knowledge,
Following the sun, of the unpeopled world.Consider ye the seed from which ye sprang;
Ye were not made to live like unto brutes,
But for pursuit of virtue and of knowledge.' Dante Alighieri, Divine Comedy, Inferno, Canto XXVI (vv. 112-120), translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
In one of the most beautiful passages of “If this is a man” - Primo Levi's testimony of his experience in a concentration camp - Levi tells how Canto XXVI of the Divine Comedy came to his mind while trying to teach Italian to a fellow French prisoner. Where humanity was totally suppressed, the words that Dante puts into the mouth of Ulysses, asking his companions in misfortune not to forget their civilization and their desire for virtue and wisdom, sound terribly liberating.
On January 27 we celebrated the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, on the subject, I recommend the testimony of Senator Liliana Segre, the webdoc of Rai Cultura and the special of Laletteraturaenoi.
